ABSTRACT Rice yield increases in response to improvements in crop management, but the impact on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the subtropical region of Southern Brazil remains unknown. A three-year field study was developed aiming to evaluate the impact that an increase in crop management levels (high and very high) has on soil methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions, as compared to the level (medium) currently adopted by farmers in Southern Brazil. Differences in crop management included seed and fertilizer rates, irrigation, and pesticide use. The effect of crop management levels on the annual partial global warming potential (pGWP = CH4 × 25 + N2O × 298) ranged from 7,547 to 17,711 kg CO2eq ha−1 and this effect was larger than on the rice... |

Gas hydrates are fascinating ice-like compounds made of water cages that retain various types of guest molecules. Natural gas hydrates on Earth form below the seafloor and permafrost and contain mainly methane (CH4). Methane from hydrate deposits could be considered as an energy resource. One possible production scenario of CH4 from hydrates is the injection of carbon dioxide (CO2) or carbon dioxide-nitrogen(CO2-N2) mixed gas into the reservoir. Depending on the thermodynamic constraints, the composition of the gas hydrate guest molecules changes: the energy source CH4 is released and the greenhouse gas CO2 is trapped. The aim of the present work is to study the mixed gas hydrates that form in gas hydrate reservoirs after injection of CO2 or CO2-N2 gas... |

In this study it was evaluated the start-up procedures of anaerobic treatment system with three horizontal anaerobic reactors (R1, R2 and R3), installed in series, with volume of 1.2 L each. R1 had sludge blanket, and R2 and R3 had half supporter of bamboo and coconut fiber, respectively. As an affluent, it was synthesized wastewater from mechanical pulping of the coffee fruit by wet method, with a mean value of total chemical oxygen demand (CODtotal) of 16,003 mg L-1. The hydraulic retention time (HRT) in each reactor was 30 h. The volumetric organic loading (VOL) applied in R1 varied from 8.9 to 25.0 g of CODtotal (L d)-1. The mean removal efficiencies of CODtotal varied from 43 to 97% in the treatment system (R1+R2+R3), stabilizing above 80% after 30... |

During the MARSITECruise expedition in November 2014 on board the RV Pourquoi Pas?, multidisciplinary sampling was carried out with the ROV Victor 6000 in order to investigate biogeochemical processes taking place at cold seep environments in the Sea of Marmara. Pore water, bottom water, sediment and authigenic carbonate samples were collected from two short push cores (MRS-DV5-PC04 − 8 cm, MRS-DV5-PC01 − 12.5 cm) at an active methane bubbling site in the southeastern part of the Çinarcik Basin. Sulfate sulfur and oxygen isotope data as well as sulfide isotope data indicate that sulfate-dependent anaerobic oxidation of methane is the dominant process in the sediments. This is confirmed by archaeal lipids diagnostic for anaerobic methane oxidizers detected... |

ABSTRACT The effect of supplementation with corn oil (CO) and its mixture with palm kernel oil (CO:PKO 75:25) to grazing cows on ruminal fermentation, milk yield, and its fatty acid (FA) profile was evaluated. The treatments were: one control treatment (C) without oil and two treatments with 720 g d−1/cow of CO or CO:PKO (ether extract: 22.7 g kg−1 for control treatment, 66 g kg−1 for CO, and 65 g kg−1 for CO:PKO). Six multiparous Holstein cows (6.3±1.8 yr, 597±11.5 kg body weight (BW), 160±29 d in milk; mean ± standard deviation) were assigned to a double 3 × 3 × 3 Latin square design. Cows grazed (3 kg DM/100 kg BW) a Cenchrus clandestinus (previously Pennisetum clandestinum) pasture and were supplemented with 0.9 kg d−1 DM corn silage, 4.2 kg d−1 DM... |

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to determine the optimal inclusion level of liquid egg hatchery waste for the anaerobic co-digestion of dairy cattle manure. A completely randomized experimental was applied, with seven treatments (liquid hatchery waste to cattle manure ratios of0: 100, 5:95, 10:90, 15:85, 20:80, 25:75 and 30:70), with five replicates (batch digester model) each. The evaluated variables were disappearance of total solids (TS), volatile solids (VS), and neutral detergent fiber (NDF), and specific production of biogas and of methane. Maximum TS and VS disappearance of 41.3% and 49.6%, were obtained at 15.5% and 16.0% liquid hatchery waste inclusion levels. The addition of 22.3% liquid hatchery considerably reduced NDF substrate... |

The sulfate-methane interface is an important biogeochemical identification interface for the areas with high methane flux and containing gas hydrate. Above the sulfate-methane interface, the sulfate concentration in the sediment is consumed progressively for the decomposition of the organic matter and anaerobic methane oxidation. Below the sulfate-methane interface, the methane concentration increases continuously with the depth. Based on the variation characters of the sulfate and methane concentration around the sulfate-methane interface, it is feasible to estimate the intensity of the methane flux, and thereafter to infer the possible occurrence of gas hydrate. The geochemical data of the pore water taken from the northern slope of the South China Sea... |

Global warming, as a consequence of excessive CO2 production mainly due to anthropogenic actions, is one of the main concerns of society due to the effects it can cause in the survival of humans, plants and animals. Several climatic consequences have already been reported, such as warming the oceans and changing biodiversity in various regions of the planet. One of the greenhouse gases responsible for global warming, which causes a lot of concern, is methane gas from digestion of food by ruminants. Besides that, emissions of greenhouse gases are represented also by waste management, rice cultivation, burning of residues from agriculture and soil management for agricultural production. Among ruminants, sheep and goats play an important economic role mainly... |

Bathymodiolus azoricus mussels thrive at Mid-Atlantic Ridge hydrothermal vents, where part of their energy requirements are met via an endosymbiotic association with chemolithotrophic and methanotrophic bacteria. In an effort to describe phenotypic characteristics of the two bacterial endosymbionts and to assess their ability to assimilate CO2, CH4 and multi-carbon compounds, we performed experiments in aquaria using C-13-labeled NaHCO3 (in the presence of H2S), CH4 or amino-acids and traced the incorporation of C-13 into total and phospholipid fatty acids (tFA and PLFA, respectively). 14:0; 15:0; 16:0; 16:1(n - 7) c+t; 18:1(n - 13) c+t and (n - 7) c+t; 20:1(n - 7); 20:2(n - 9,15); 18:3(n - 7) and (n - 5,10,13) PLFA were labeled in the presence of... |

ABSTRACT Water management impacts both methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions from rice paddy fields. Although controlled irrigation is one of the most important tools for reducing CH4emission in rice production systems it can also increase N2O emissions and reduce crop yields. Over three years, CH4 and N2O emissions were measured in a rice field in Uruguay under two different irrigation management systems, using static closed chambers: conventional water management (continuous flooding after 30 days of emergence, CF30); and an alternative system (controlled deficit irrigation allowing for wetting and drying, AWDI). AWDI showed mean cumulative CH4 emission values of 98.4 kg CH4 ha−1, 55 % lower compared to CF30, while no differences in nitrous... |
