Soil CH4 and N2O Emissions from Rice Paddy Fields in Southern Brazil as Affected by Crop Management Levels: a Three-Year Field Study Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Zschornack,Tiago; Rosa,Carla Machado da; Reis,Cecília Estima Sacramento dos; Pedroso,Gabriel Munhoz; Camargo,Estefânia Silva; Santos,Daiane Carvalho dos; Boeni,Madalena; Bayer,Cimélio.
ABSTRACT Rice yield increases in response to improvements in crop management, but the impact on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the subtropical region of Southern Brazil remains unknown. A three-year field study was developed aiming to evaluate the impact that an increase in crop management levels (high and very high) has on soil methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions, as compared to the level (medium) currently adopted by farmers in Southern Brazil. Differences in crop management included seed and fertilizer rates, irrigation, and pesticide use. The effect of crop management levels on the annual partial global warming potential (pGWP = CH4 × 25 + N2O × 298) ranged from 7,547 to 17,711 kg CO2eq ha−1 and this effect was larger than on the rice...

Stability of mixed gas hydrates and mass transfer during formation, accumulation and destabilization: laboratory experiment and modeling ArchiMer
Legoix, Ludovic.
Gas hydrates are fascinating ice-like compounds made of water cages that retain various types of guest molecules. Natural gas hydrates on Earth form below the seafloor and permafrost and contain mainly methane (CH4). Methane from hydrate deposits could be considered as an energy resource. One possible production scenario of CH4 from hydrates is the injection of carbon dioxide (CO2) or carbon dioxide-nitrogen(CO2-N2) mixed gas into the reservoir. Depending on the thermodynamic constraints, the composition of the gas hydrate guest molecules changes: the energy source CH4 is released and the greenhouse gas CO2 is trapped. The aim of the present work is to study the mixed gas hydrates that form in gas hydrate reservoirs after injection of CO2 or CO2-N2 gas...

Sulfate fertilizer influencing methane emissions in paddy field and rice (cv. Chainat 1) production Thai Agricultural
Patcharee Saenjan; Natthakittiya Paiboon; Jamnong Tragoolram.
Methane (CH4) is one of the most important greenhouse gases having a significant impact upon global warming. Today, paddy fields are a major source of methane production. The objective of our experiment is to investigate whether sulfate fertilizer can reduce the amount of methane emissions from the paddy field into the atmosphere, while maintain or increase fertility of the paddy soil, and the rice production of Chainat1. The experimental plan was structured using the Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD), consisting of four treatments: 1) Incorporation of rice stubble without the usage of sulfate fertilizer, 2) Incorporation of rice stubble using sulfate fertilizer, 18 kg SO4/rai, 3) Incorporation of rice stubble using sulfate fertilizer, 32 kg SO4/rai,...

Sulfate-dependent anaerobic oxidation of methane at a highly dynamic bubbling site in the Eastern Sea of Marmara (Çinarcik Basin) ArchiMer
Teichert, B. M. A.; Chevalier, N.; Gussone, N.; Bayon, Germain; Ponzevera, Emmanuel; Ruffine, Livio; Strauss, H..
During the MARSITECruise expedition in November 2014 on board the RV Pourquoi Pas?, multidisciplinary sampling was carried out with the ROV Victor 6000 in order to investigate biogeochemical processes taking place at cold seep environments in the Sea of Marmara. Pore water, bottom water, sediment and authigenic carbonate samples were collected from two short push cores (MRS-DV5-PC04 − 8 cm, MRS-DV5-PC01 − 12.5 cm) at an active methane bubbling site in the southeastern part of the Çinarcik Basin. Sulfate sulfur and oxygen isotope data as well as sulfide isotope data indicate that sulfate-dependent anaerobic oxidation of methane is the dominant process in the sediments. This is confirmed by archaeal lipids diagnostic for anaerobic methane oxidizers detected...

The likely regional impacts of an agricultural emissions policy in New Zealand: Preliminary analysis AgEcon
Sin, Isabelle; Brunton, Emma; Hendy, Joanna; Kerr, Suzi.
Hendy and Kerr (2005b) find that an emissions charge on agricultural methane and nitrous oxide of $25 per tonne of carbon dioxide (CO2) equivalent would be likely to reduce New Zealand‘s net land-use related emissions for commitment period one in the order of 3%, with full accounting. The costs per farmer and as a percentage of profit would be very high. This paper considers the regional impacts of such a policy in New Zealand by allocating the emission charge across space according to the location of animals. We then combine our emissions charge information with data on the socio-economic characteristics of the affected areas. Obviously rural areas are heavily affected. In many respects, for example median income, ethnic mix, and percentage of working...

The Relationship of Sulfate-methane Interface, the Methane Flux and the Underlying Gas Hydrate. OceanDocs
Fang, Yinxia; Chu, Fengyou.
The sulfate-methane interface is an important biogeochemical identification interface for the areas with high methane flux and containing gas hydrate. Above the sulfate-methane interface, the sulfate concentration in the sediment is consumed progressively for the decomposition of the organic matter and anaerobic methane oxidation. Below the sulfate-methane interface, the methane concentration increases continuously with the depth. Based on the variation characters of the sulfate and methane concentration around the sulfate-methane interface, it is feasible to estimate the intensity of the methane flux, and thereafter to infer the possible occurrence of gas hydrate. The geochemical data of the pore water taken from the northern slope of the South China Sea...

The role of condensed tannins in ruminant animal production: advances, limitations and future directions R. Bras. Zootec.
Naumann,Harley D.; Tedeschi,Luis O.; Zeller,Wayne E.; Huntley,Nichole F..
ABSTRACT Tannins represent one of the most abundant polyphenolic compounds in plants. Tannins exist as a multitude of chemically unique entities in nature. The most commonly occurring tannins are typically divided into two major classes based on chemical structure: hydrolysable (HT) or condensed tannins (CT). Hydrolysable tannins are esters of gallic or ellagic acid linked to a polyol core, typically glucose. Condensed tannins or proanthocyanidins consist of flavan-3-ol subunits linked together to form oligomers and polymers. Both HT and CT are defined as astringent, medium-to-high-molecular weight polyphenolic compounds that characteristically bind and precipitate soluble proteins. The objective of this paper was to present recent advances in CT-ruminant...

The role of small ruminants on global climate change Animal Sciences
Monteiro, Alda Lúcia Gomes; Faro, Amanda Moser Coelho da Fonseca; Peres, Mylena Taborda Piquera; Batista, Rafael; Poli, Cesar Henrique Espirito Candal; Villalba, Juan Jose.
Global warming, as a consequence of excessive CO2 production mainly due to anthropogenic actions, is one of the main concerns of society due to the effects it can cause in the survival of humans, plants and animals. Several climatic consequences have already been reported, such as warming the oceans and changing biodiversity in various regions of the planet. One of the greenhouse gases responsible for global warming, which causes a lot of concern, is methane gas from digestion of food by ruminants. Besides that, emissions of greenhouse gases are represented also by waste management, rice cultivation, burning of residues from agriculture and soil management for agricultural production. Among ruminants, sheep and goats play an important economic role mainly...

Towards an Integrated Global Agricultural Greenhouse Gas Model: Greenhouse Gases from Agriculture Simulation Model (GreenAgSiM) AgEcon
Dumortier, Jerome; Hayes, Dermot J..
The Greenhouse Gases from Agriculture Simulation Model (GreenAgSiM) presented in this paper aims to quantify emissions from agricultural activity on a global scale. The model takes emissions into account that are directly attributable to agricultural production, such as enteric fermentation (methane), manure management (methane and nitrous oxide), and agricultural soil management (nitrous oxide). Furthermore, carbon stock differences from land-use change (carbon dioxide) induced by agriculture are included in the model. The model will provide policy makers with information about the greenhouse gas implications of policy changes.

Tracing carbon assimilation in endosymbiotic deep-sea hydrothermal vent Mytilid fatty acids by C-13-fingerprinting ArchiMer
Riou, V.; Bouillon, S.; Serrao Santos, R.; Dehairs, F.; Colaco, A..
Bathymodiolus azoricus mussels thrive at Mid-Atlantic Ridge hydrothermal vents, where part of their energy requirements are met via an endosymbiotic association with chemolithotrophic and methanotrophic bacteria. In an effort to describe phenotypic characteristics of the two bacterial endosymbionts and to assess their ability to assimilate CO2, CH4 and multi-carbon compounds, we performed experiments in aquaria using C-13-labeled NaHCO3 (in the presence of H2S), CH4 or amino-acids and traced the incorporation of C-13 into total and phospholipid fatty acids (tFA and PLFA, respectively). 14:0; 15:0; 16:0; 16:1(n - 7) c+t; 18:1(n - 13) c+t and (n - 7) c+t; 20:1(n - 7); 20:2(n - 9,15); 18:3(n - 7) and (n - 5,10,13) PLFA were labeled in the presence of...

Yield-scaled global warming potential of two irrigation management systems in a highly productive rice system Scientia Agricola
Tarlera,Silvana; Capurro,María Cristina; Irisarri,Pilar; Scavino,Ana Fernández; Cantou,Guillermina; Roel,Alvaro.
ABSTRACT Water management impacts both methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions from rice paddy fields. Although controlled irrigation is one of the most important tools for reducing CH4emission in rice production systems it can also increase N2O emissions and reduce crop yields. Over three years, CH4 and N2O emissions were measured in a rice field in Uruguay under two different irrigation management systems, using static closed chambers: conventional water management (continuous flooding after 30 days of emergence, CF30); and an alternative system (controlled deficit irrigation allowing for wetting and drying, AWDI). AWDI showed mean cumulative CH4 emission values of 98.4 kg CH4 ha−1, 55 % lower compared to CF30, while no differences in nitrous...
